How Plants Protect Themselves

It is a well know fact that trees and plants are also living beings. They need food, water, and air for survival. It is interesting to know how they take their food.

Plants derive their food both from the earth and the air. If you minutely look at their roots, you will find that the ends of these roots are like fine fibres. We call them roots-hairs. They absorb water and minerals and transport them upward to the leaves through the trunk and the branches. It is the leaves which preapare the food.

The gree material, chlorophyl, present in the leaves prepares the food like a machine. It convers the carbon dioxide taken from the air and water from the ground into sugar with the help of sunlight. This chemical reaction is called photosynthesis. In fact, the chlorophyll takes energy from the sunlight and uses it to bon dioxide for making sugar. This reaction also gives out oxygen and water which are excreted by the leaves.

Sugar is further converted into starch and is stored in the plant. The minerals are converted by chemical processes into proteins, juice, oil, and other edible materials. The plants use these materials as their food for growth. This food gradually passes on all the parts of the plant. A part of this food is deposited in the seed under information in the plant. This accumulated food in the seed is used in germination.
