The Indonesian Archipelago

The Indonesian Archipelago is the largest group of island in the world. It extends between two continents, Asia and Australia. It also lies between two oceans the Samudera Indonesia and the Pasific Ocean.
Indonesia’s 13,667 islands stretch 5,120 kilometres from esat to west and 1,770 kilometres from north to south. The five main islands are sumatera, Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, and Irian Jaya (Papua).

Indonesia has a land area of 1,904,345 square kilometers. More than half of it is forested land and a large part is mountainous, with 15 of the mountains are still volcanically active. One of history’s greatest volcanic eruptions, which killed thousands of people, occurred in 1883 on the island of Krakatau, which lies between Java and Sumatera.

Indonesia is one of the most populous countries in the world. Its total population is 160 milion. More than 60% of the population live on the island of Java. The Indonesian population consists of more than 300 ethnic group which speak 500 different languages, but more of them understand the national language, Bahasa Indonesia.

The Indonesian Government’s campaign to  popularize Bahasa Indonesia at present can be seen through signs in public places and various which say ‘Use good Bahasa Indonesia correctly’. Indonesia’s moto offices Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, which means Unity in Diversity, symbolizes the unity of the people in spite of their ethnic and cultural origins.

Communication

The word communication comes from the verb communicate, which means to gove or exchange information, news, ideas or opinions by speech or writing. In other words, communication is the sending of information or news from one person to another, or the exchange of such information or news between people.

Theough communication people learn from one another the things they want to know. Imagine if human beings sould not communicate with one another. If a person cannot communicate, he will not talk to other people, and no other people will talk to him or teach him anything. So it would be impossible for him to learn anything. Can he learn anything by himself.

He could a child learn to do anything at all if he did not have the chance to communicate with other people, especially with his parents, brother and sisters. He would not learn to talk and would not learn to do any other things either. Someone must teach the child. In other words, someone must communicate knowledge and skills to child.

The main way people communicate with one another is by speaking. Two people can communicate in this way when they are near to each other. Now a days, however, we can use electronic instrument like the telephone, radio and telegraph as a means of communication by writing letters.

Writing began when men used pictures to explain their thoughts to others. Now writing has become a very important means to communicate. Newspaper, magazines, book and other printed materials use writing. Since communication is important for gaining knowledge, you must communicate actively with other people, especially with your teacher and friends at school.

Indonesian Life

The Indonesian society consists of rural and urban society. Rural society lives in villages. They usually make their livings by farming. Some make their livings by working in home industries. Home industries are usually smallscale industries, so they don’t need many workers.

There are many kinds of jobs people can do in cities, Cities are the center of big industries. Most government offices are also centeres in cities. Therefore, most people in the village want to move to cities.

The villagers move to cities in great numbers t get jobs. Some get what they want, but most of them don’t. they who have skills or good education can become government civil servants or employees of private enterprises. The unskilled and uneducated can only work in informal sectors, such as, food sellers, porters, and house servants.

As the cities are densely populated, the demand for daily needs increases sharply. This condition motivates the growth of trade and new merchants. Life in a city is a competition. It is a hard life. Everyone must work to earn a living

How Plants Protect Themselves

It is a well know fact that trees and plants are also living beings. They need food, water, and air for survival. It is interesting to know how they take their food.

Plants derive their food both from the earth and the air. If you minutely look at their roots, you will find that the ends of these roots are like fine fibres. We call them roots-hairs. They absorb water and minerals and transport them upward to the leaves through the trunk and the branches. It is the leaves which preapare the food.

The gree material, chlorophyl, present in the leaves prepares the food like a machine. It convers the carbon dioxide taken from the air and water from the ground into sugar with the help of sunlight. This chemical reaction is called photosynthesis. In fact, the chlorophyll takes energy from the sunlight and uses it to bon dioxide for making sugar. This reaction also gives out oxygen and water which are excreted by the leaves.

Sugar is further converted into starch and is stored in the plant. The minerals are converted by chemical processes into proteins, juice, oil, and other edible materials. The plants use these materials as their food for growth. This food gradually passes on all the parts of the plant. A part of this food is deposited in the seed under information in the plant. This accumulated food in the seed is used in germination.
